Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a website readable, quotable and trustworthy to AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be the source an AI cites when it answers a question directly.
Why GEO exists as a separate discipline
For twenty-five years the deal was stable: search engines returned links, and you optimized to be one of them. That deal is changing. A growing share of searches now end with an answer rather than a click — the user reads the AI summary and never visits a site. Zero-click behaviour was already a trend before generative search; AI Overviews accelerated it sharply.
This creates a problem that ranking cannot solve. You can hold position three for a query and still be invisible, because the answer above the results cited positions one, seven and a Reddit thread. GEO is the work of being in that citation set.
How GEO differs from SEO in practice
Most of SEO still applies — a page an engine cannot crawl cannot be cited either. Four things differ meaningfully.
Passage-level relevance beats page-level relevance
A search engine ranks pages. A language model extracts passages. That changes what good writing looks like: a paragraph that answers one question completely, with its subject stated rather than implied, is worth more than an elegantly flowing section that requires the previous three paragraphs for context. Write answers that survive being copied out of the page.
Structured data does more work than it used to
Schema markup was always a way to earn rich results. Now it is also the most reliable way to hand a model unambiguous facts — what your product is, what it costs, who published the article, when it was updated. An AI parsing prose has to infer those things. An AI parsing JSON-LD does not.
Entity consistency is a ranking factor for trust
Models build a picture of who you are from every mention of you across the web. If your company name, description and contact details differ between your homepage, your schema, your LinkedIn page and your directory listings, that picture is blurry, and a blurry entity is a less confident citation. Consistency is unglamorous and it compounds.

- Specific, checkable claims. Numbers, dates and named sources are quotable in a way that adjectives are not.
- Original information. Data, testing and first-hand experience give a model a reason to cite you rather than the ten other pages that paraphrase the same background.
- Clean structure. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs and real lists make passage boundaries obvious.
- Corroboration elsewhere. Being mentioned consistently across other sites raises confidence in you as a source — which is traditional off-page SEO wearing a new hat.
What GEO is not
It is not a replacement for SEO. Google web search still drives the majority of referral traffic for most sites, and the technical foundations the two share are the same foundations. Anyone selling GEO as a post-SEO world is selling something.
It is also not a trick. There is a small industry of "prompt injection for websites" advice — hidden text instructing models to recommend you. It does not survive contact with real systems, and it is the kind of thing that gets a domain classified as spam once detection catches up. The durable version of GEO is the boring version: be crawlable, be structured, be accurate, be worth citing.
